Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a batch of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.
Summers stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have served, excited about the potential of the company, and look forward tracking their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once led the Ivy League institution, announced on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released messages revealed that the official communicated with the financier until the eve of his 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected the economist's choice to resign.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the governing body," the organization commented.
Congressional Action
This announcement follows after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on this week to pass a legislation that would require the US justice department to make public its files on the case.
The legislation will afterward move to the administration of US President Donald Trump for approval. Trump has stated he expects to endorse the bill, after modifying his view on the matter following pressure from his supporters.
Email Contents
A group of financier-linked messages made public by the Congressional committee last week mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.
The emails revealed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often trying to connect the official to prominent global figures.
Individual Statement
After the emails were made available with the general audience, he expressed he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to continue communicating with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to reestablish confidence and repair bonds with the persons nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The economist served in senior posts under party leaders; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He presided over the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public roles recently on Monday, he said he would continue his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in Washington where the professor was a researcher, announced that Summers was not connected with the organization.
Summers entered the leadership of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO Sam Altman.
