Heat and Trail Blazers Secure Initial Victories Following Recent Detentions
Miami put up 86 first-half scores versus the Grizzlies
The Heat earned a crushing 146-114 win over the Grizzlies in their first NBA match after player Rozier was detained for alleged unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping FBI probe into illegal gambling. The two individuals contest the claims.
But, the Heat were focused as they recorded 86 first-half scores to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.
Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later said Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Complete backing," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is very dear to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers also secured their first game after the arrests, with Brazil-born Splitter taking over as interim coach in Billups' absence and leading the team to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver also said an league probe into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he played for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"And two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Terry.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
